Skin Health Surveillance in Cardiff

Doctor-led skin health surveillance for workers exposed to substances or workplace processes that may cause occupational dermatitis or other work-related skin problems.

What Is Skin Health Surveillance?

Skin health surveillance may be appropriate where workers are exposed to substances, wet work or occupational processes capable of causing irritant or allergic skin disease.

Regular surveillance can help identify early symptoms or visible skin changes so that workplace exposure, controls and the need for further medical assessment can be considered promptly.

Marina Medicals can support employers with baseline and periodic skin surveillance according to workplace risks, exposure history and employer requirements.

Baseline Skin Surveillance

Initial assessment for workers entering roles involving relevant skin exposure, establishing symptoms and skin condition at baseline.

Periodic Skin Surveillance

Repeat surveillance for exposed workers to identify new or changing symptoms or skin abnormalities.

Medical Review Where Indicated

Where surveillance identifies persistent symptoms, significant skin changes or other concerns, further occupational-health assessment or referral may be recommended.

What Can Skin Surveillance Consider?

Skin Symptoms & Changes

Dryness, redness, itching, cracking, blistering, rash or other reported or visible skin changes.

Workplace Exposure

Contact with irritants, sensitisers, chemicals, frequent wet work, gloves or other relevant occupational exposures.

Pattern & Work Relationship

Whether symptoms vary with working periods, particular tasks, substances or time away from work.

Skin health surveillance does not replace effective control of workplace exposure. It forms part of the employer’s wider COSHH and occupational risk-management arrangements.

When May Skin Surveillance Be Relevant?

Wet Work

Workers whose duties involve frequent hand washing, prolonged water contact or other substantial wet-work exposure.

Irritants & Chemicals

Exposure to substances capable of damaging or irritating the skin.

Skin Sensitisers

Exposure to substances capable of causing allergic contact dermatitis or other occupational sensitisation.

How Does Skin Health Surveillance Work?

1. Baseline Assessment

Relevant skin history, symptoms and occupational exposure are recorded when surveillance begins.

2. Periodic Review

Workers are reviewed at appropriate intervals for new symptoms or skin changes.

3. Escalation Where Required

Concerning findings may lead to occupational-health review, advice regarding exposure or controls, and referral for further clinical assessment where appropriate.
