Shipping & Cruise Medicals

Doctor-led employer-specific PEMEs and crew medicals for shipping and cruise personnel, completed to the medical form, testing protocol or certification requirements of the employer or crewing agency.

What is a Shipping or Cruise Employer Medical?

Shipping companies, cruise lines and crewing agencies may require their own pre-employment, periodic or deployment medical examination before a crew member joins a vessel.

These medicals are completed to the employer’s or crewing agency’s medical form and can vary according to the company, vessel, role, flag, destination and deployment requirements.

An employer-specific shipping or cruise PEME is separate from statutory ENG1 or ML5 certification. Some crew members may require both an employer medical and the appropriate statutory seafarer certificate.

Employer-Specific Shipping & Cruise PEME

Medical assessment completed to the requirements of a shipping company, cruise line, employer or crewing agency.

The assessment may include clinical examination, investigations, laboratory testing and other employer-specified requirements.

Do You Need ENG1 or ML5 Too?

ENG1 and ML5 are separate UK maritime medical certification pathways and should not automatically be assumed to replace an employer-specific crew medical.

The certificate required depends on the vessel, role and area of operation.

Please send the employer or crewing-agency medical form, testing schedule or joining requirements before booking where possible. We can then confirm the required investigations, appointment duration and fee.

ONE DOCTOR • ONE COORDINATED PATHWAY

Complex Cruise & Shipping Medicals — Coordinated From Start to Finish

Cruise and shipping medical requirements can involve much more than a single examination. Different cruise lines, shipping companies and crewing agencies may require their own medical forms, investigations, laboratory testing and certification before joining or deployment.

At Marina Medicals, your employer or crewing-agency requirements are reviewed directly by the doctor responsible for your assessment and certification. Where possible, the required examinations and tests are completed during the same visit, with one point of contact throughout the process.

Depending on the specification, this may include physical examination, vaccination review, ECG, audiometry, spirometry, Chester Step Test, blood sampling, drug and alcohol testing, colour-vision or greyscale assessment, focused mental-health or female-worker assessment, and other role-specific examinations.

Where required, statutory ENG1 or ML5 certification can also be considered alongside the employer-specific medical. Chest X-ray, laboratory testing and specialist investigations such as exercise ECG can be coordinated where required.

Results are followed through to completion and the required employer or crewing-agency documentation is checked and finalised once all requirements have been satisfied. Where the required external results are available promptly, complex medical packages can usually be completed within five working days.

What Can a Shipping & Cruise PEME Include?

The exact assessment depends on the shipping company, cruise line, crewing agency, vessel and deployment requirements. Marina Medicals can complete the specified medical examination and arrange additional investigations where required.
